Obituary for Harold William Wakeford

Harold William Wakeford passed away Saturday, December 29, 2018 at Novant Hospital in Matthews,
NC with his family at his side. Born October 29, 1926 to Earl Wakeford and Helen Young Wakeford
(affectionately known as “Grandma Susie”) he grew up in Michigan living in Alpena, the Detroit area,
and graduating from Lyons-Muir High School. He married Janet Marie Povish in 1946 and together they
raised four daughters, Terry, Carla, Patti and Karen. Following Janet’s death, he married Candace
Nelson.
“Wake”, as he was known, lived an extraordinary life full of fun and adventure. In his later years he
loved sharing stories of his youth, especially times he spent at Hubbard Lake with his Uncle John Young.
Shortly after the birth of his first child, he moved his family to Burlington, Iowa where the other three
daughters were born. While in Burlington, he owned and operated Wake’s Motorcycles, Inc. After
losing his business to the big flood of 1965, he moved his family to Venice, Florida where he started over
with Cycle Specialties, Inc. He remained in the motorcycle business until he retired in the late 70’s but
remained very active in bartering, willing to trade for anything, right up until his passing at 92!
“Wake” will be remembered for many things including his great sense of humor, his spirit of adventure,
and his love of animals, not just normal household pets, but snakes, alligators, ferrets, monkeys, lizards,
and his companion blue and gold macaw, Maggie. He loved motorcycles, especially Indian Motorcycles,
and flying. He was such an interesting man to talk to. He experienced so much in life and could
certainly spin tales about those experiences from racing motorcycles at Daytona, to owning and
operating a “hotel” in South America and taking tours down the Amazon, to his days of junking around
the Midwest.
He loved his family and is survived by his four daughters, Terry Lankford of Charlotte, NC; Carla
Whiteaker and Patti Mixon (Gene) both of Venice, FL; Karen Walker (Kent) of Sarasota, FL; and a step
son, Christian Nelson of Wells, MI. He also left behind two granddaughters, Caity and Betsy Whiteaker,
a grandson Robert Lankford, a step granddaughter Meikka Mixon and a step grandson Joey Richardson.
He was preceded in death by his parents Earl and Helen Wakeford, two brothers, Wayne and John, his
wife Janet and his second wife Candace.
Per “Wake’s” request, no formal memorial service is planned. However, if you would like to have a
“shot and a beer” in his honor, he would certainly not object!
