Obituary for Joy Anna Liuzza

A Tribute to Dr. Joy A. Liuzza, a special lady, a special life...
Joy's education included a Bachelor of Science from Texas Woman's University; Masters of Business Administration (Guidance & Counseling) Sam Houston State University; and Doctorate of Educational Administration (Guidance & Counseling), Texas Southern University. Joy highly valued the education she gave and the education she received. To prepare herself for her many roles in her career, she additionally accomplished several certifications: Texas Administrator's Certificate, Texas Teachers Certificate, Registered Play Therapist, Licensed Professional Counselor, and Educational Diagnostician.
Joy worked for over 30 years in the Houston ISD school system. She served as a School Counselor and Classroom Teacher. She was School Principal for River Oaks Elementary School, Whittier Elementary School and Furr High School. She served as a School Principal for 20 years. In addition, for the Houston ISD district she was a Central Office Administrator for many years serving as a District Principal for District 13.
After retiring from Houston ISD, Joy became “Dr. Joy" to the many lives she touched as she continued her career as a counselor and consultant for various groups including DePelchin Children's Services, Harris County Early Childhood Mental Health Services, Spaulding for children post-adoptive agency, and Community Care Systems providing in-home health counseling. In addition she supervised LPC Counselor Interns and was a school and community liaison for a nonprofit dropout/at risk prevention program for the Community in Schools Houston Inc. Program.
For many years Joy was an adjunct professor at Sam Houston State University and Houston Baptist University. Her specialty was teacher preparation and supervising teacher interns.
Joy participated in many voluntary Professional and Humanitarian efforts. She was proud to be a past member of Delta Kappa Game, The Blue Birds and Houston Junior Forum. She provided educational instruction as part of the SMILE Program at South Main Baptist Church, Houston TX.
As a School Principal, Joy was brilliant. She had natural ability in helping to resolve conflicts and making people want to be part of her work. She had a gift in helping people develop their
talents. She was unselfish. She listened. She cared deeply and sincerely for others. Many adult and children owe her a great debt for all she did and gave for them. As a University Professor, she trained new teachers and counselors how to do those jobs well and how to survive the difficult times. As a Counselor Dr. Joy helped children and teens improve from difficult situations and emotional times in their lives. As an administrator she was a leader that everyone wanted to follow.
Joy loved cooking, entertaining and welcoming and introducing others. She was the host-est with the most-est! She cherished her time and fun with her late husband, Phil, and their friends at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Joy loved her daughter, Rozanna and husband Joe, and her grandson Randall, her husband Phil and family. She always felt loved and talked often of them. She knew she was loved. Joy will be greatly missed. Most importantly she was a trusted and sweet mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to so many of us.
